And The Winners Are.......
Posted by: CheriS on Dec 10, 2002 - 10:44 PM
General News & Announcements In August of 2002, Reptile Republic, an affiliate of Fluker Farms opened a website and E-mailed many users from other forums inviting them to their site, to get a passport and a chance to win a free dragons.

Some forums were forced to change their authentication system to try and safeguard those users. Which, in turn, we as community members lost the privledge of being able to contact others in direct email. That was only the start of what ended being a disasterous turn of events for herp lovers on the web.

These winners and others reading them, found something that many of us had known prior to the website, as we had bought reptiles that were infected with a host of problems which we later found had been sold to others and petstores by Reptile Republic.

Below is a compiling of the post from those winners and others trying to help them, there were many other posts warning people prior to these and of winners statements, but those had all been deleted before these, and many comments by winners were also deleted between some of these.

I'm very new here and don't understand some apparent politics but I can't believe any business would intentionally send out sick animals. Anyone knows this would come back to bite them. Let's hope for trouble's beardies sake.
Stephanie

ok well since you are new i won't get mad.......
but i had them only 4 days and i didn't make them sick..
so i hope thatis not what you are saying?????????????
trouble

Don't be silly! Of course you didn't make them sick. I'm sure everyone feels bad about all the problems you're having. I'm hoping that things are made right for you. I just can't believe he would jeopordize his business by purposefully sending out sick dragons.
Stephanie

Are there other winners with problems with their BD's?
Stephanie

trouble

I'll find out when i get mine
MIchael

No mine are fine vet has seen them and everything
Sam

NOTE: Later Sam posted: sorry but i am starting to agreee with Patti....
I can understand if ppl will hate me after this but i a few weeks ago noticed that my dragons are really sick and that was about 1 week after we got them i tok them to the vet and he said they look like a lizard gone wrong.. SO if u hate me then post it but right now until RR and Howard comes up with anymore info i am sticking to this........

THAT GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!
Roger

YES! :'(
My little bd seemed to be doing fine... (eating, active alert & SEEMED healthy) But apperently he wasn't because he passed away away last night! :'( :'( :'(

I took a stool sample to the vet today, the only one who would even look at exotics, and he said there were several parasites in the stool. He asked me how big my dragon was and gave me some meds. I asked him if my little guy was in any danger, and he said that he wasn't, but there were more parasites in his stool than there should be. The vet I usually take my herps to is on vacation, so I'll have to wait to get a second opinion, but I feel confident that my dragon will be fine. He is still active, and eating well. I know if his feces were crawling with parasites, the vet would have been more concerned. I will keep you guys updated with anything new that I find out about his condition.

Just wanted to drop a line to say thank you to all who have posted with info , for those of us with problems..
The links i have seen for coccidia are very good and have offered good suggestions.
I am sorry to hear that more of my fellow winners and forum members are having the same problem i am!
I am glad to hear that more and more of you are getting your babies checked out!
That is the most importanat thing we can all do for them, is to maintain there health!
It is very understandable that many of us have a lot on our minds at this point! And i feel as though we have a right to speak our minds!
As much as some people don't want to hear it..
There has not been a major difference in my bd's during there meds, and i am really hoping that there re-check proves them to be coccidia free next week!
I really hope there are no more problems they or I or anyone have to face!
I wish the best for all involved and i hope you will all keep us posted as i will!
I am so sorry to anyone winner here or not who have lost a beloved pet!
My thoughts are with you all !!
thank you for reading!
** Trouble**

I am so glad your babies are feeling good. =) Mine wont eat crickets at all... in fact about all he does is sleep.
I mixed some baby chicken food with ensure. I dip a small piece of mustard green into the mixture and hold it by his mouth. He will lick some of it off. I do this until he wont take anymore at all. He doesnt lick up to much of it, but I keep doing it every 2 hours. I hope to keep him hydrated this way.
If this is wrong for me to do, will someone please let me know.
Good luck to everyone who has sick beardies!!
Aly

did you have a fecal done on him?
Cheri

Yes cheri she did, and he tested positive!
please give her all info you can, as i am not good yet on adding links!
thank you!
and Aly, i am so so sorry you are having this trouble, i wish there was something i could do to help!
Please let me know how things r going i will pray for the little ones full recovery!
Trouble

Hmmm... for some reason it won't let me post my message. I am using wrong language??
Anyway, he did test positive.
Aly

Believe it or not you cant say howards last name i was typing a post with no bad language at all and it wouldnt let me post. I went back trying to figure out what it was and it was fl*ker. If you typed this this could be why. You know what i find funny? you type something it doesnt like and it says " your post dont use proper language" which is ofcourse not proper language. There is a thread i already wrote about this lol
Sarah
Ps Good luck with the sick beardies

I've had a few posts lead me to the "your post dont use proper language" message, also. I remove "respiratory" "resp" "infection" and "husbandry" and sudden it lets me post an "acceptible" hackneyed version. Soon it won't let me link to anapsid.org, my favorite general/reference herp site....
Wendy

Wendy Im so not surprised. Its because they dont want us speaking about the sick beardies.. what a joke... so we cant talk about any sick animals? what about in the vet forum? MAN!
Sarah

How come when everyone was winning dragons and there was nothing wrong with them Mr. Flucker was blowing up Patti's spot. Now that there are many sick dragons being shipped out Mr. Flucker has nothing to say about it. I am not here to start trouble. I am playing devils advocate. Mr. Flucker your response is welcome.
Dan

It's obvious this dude does not care. I tried to get some simple answers in a very nice way while on the chat with Mr.F...he was chatting up a storm until I asked him about the contest problems...he's playing ostrich, I think.
LizardDude

It won't work
He stuck his head in the sand in 1992 when he was shipping sick iguanas into the US and other countries, and ended up having to finally admit he was at fault and make changes in his husbandry.
He was VERY lucky last time that more iguana owners did not come after him to recover their vet costs. He is hoping the herp community will be as forgiving this time. I, for one, will not be so easily distracted
Patti

I had a long chat with him the other night too. He knows theres a problem, I just don't think he's willing to admit that he needs to do something about it. Tht would be admiting that it might be Fl*kers fault, and I don't think he is ready to do that. I agree with the ostrich comparison, he's sticking his head in the sand hoping it will all go away. If the next shipment of babies are all healthy, then it may work. If we have more people with sick dragons, then all hell is going to continue to break loose, and I don't see how he can continue to do nothing.

read with dismay, all of the posts that are written here with the plight of the sick beardies.
For those of you that have lost your new pets my thoughts are with ya'all. I am a relative newbie to this site and have watched this forum with interest.
It is such a pity that this particular company is shedding its rubbish onto unsuspecting members of their site. Seriously....they must know, and why do they do it, it must do more damage than good. Geez, I bet you they dont accept sub-standard equipment, vehicles, computers or lizards. I am sure they must have vets and microscopes and the facilities to check these things.
Perhaps there are some laws ?? Laws about sending infected critters through the system, or laws for cruelty, for not treating sick animals..
These are my thoughts and opinions and are not a personal attack on anyone or the company they operate.
Brett

Just came from the basement after reading carefully everything on the box, it is from Miami Florida, not El Salvador. The form I signed said nothing of the contents. The box should have been labled Live Harmless Reptiles, at least all other shipments I've received had this stamped on them...I've never used Fed Ex before though...
K-Dog

My husband picked up the box from Fed-ex, the form they had, (I am guessing right now and can ask him when he comes home if it's the one he signed) the one he had to sign... said the package contained crickets!!
Aly

I saved the box for what it's worth, and no there is no Customs stamp. I am also saving the baby for necropsy if someone will pay for the costs?
It has to stop...How many more victims are going to die? I want to help Patti whatever I can do.
K-Dog

I still have the box mine came in. There are no stamps, and the lable says it came from Miami.

People Please Listen: My B.D. is Already Dead
I got it yesterday from the contest and this morning it's lying on its back. I don't know what to say other than how sick I am about this...I didn't feed it anything, it couldn't have swallowed anything, I only used a paper towel as substrate and well, you now know the rest...I was supposed to receive two since I won two, I guess I should be grateful two aren't dead? This was a hatchling, it never should have been shipped at this age, skinny as a rail, what were they thinking? Thought you people might be interested...I hope you have better luck with yours...
K-Dog

Your filter prevents me from mentioning the chain I am dealing with....
Pet s Mart
They have received coccidia-infested DOA's at a number of their locations, all purchased from F. Farms.
Patti

Isn't there any way to contact RR directly? This is awful if they are mailing out sick babies. :(
Wendy

I really thought after last week, they would make sure the babies were healthy. I can't understand why they don't care about the animals they raise.
AT least your little one doesn't have to suffer with illness... I watch mine throw up almost everything that goes into its tiny little belly.
The vet told me today... "Sometimes you just can't save them"
Again, I am so very sorry K-dog!! {{{Hugs}}}
Aly

I have a lot of lizards and I could not even stand the thought of even one of them being sick. I don't know how anyone can ship out a sick baby. :(
Wendi

Here is a post you should see, by Dr J, that they deleted.
The following I copied just before they deleted the post. It confused me, just read it and tell me what you think. It is a reply to K-Dog by Dr. J
JimL

This is a really good image to the farm? So sorry K….. imagine what you want me to say this is ridiculous these guys at the farm just don't care about the contest we are supposed to give away dragons to promote the RR site and bring more people to the site witch was created to educate people not to actually infect the pets they already have and now they come with this, first coccidia, then, hookworms, now death this is ridiculous I got to go to the farm and stop this person who is sending sick and weak animals.
I wonder why other clients of the farm are not getting sick animals?
Because other wise they would be complaining too, so there is something weird about this someone is doing this on propose ...may be someone at the farm don't want the RR site on the web anymore? I don’t want to jump to conclusions but is to odd and never happened before(sick babies)
I'm really concern because this you know the web site was crated to help some problems herpers might have with theirs reptile pets no to send diseased animal to the RR audience, and is a really nice reptile community already
Dr. J

very strange.....................
Bruce

I AM SO SO SORRY ABOUT YOUR BABY!!
I KNOW U KNEW OF THE TROUBLE ALREADY, BUT I DON'T THINK EVEN U EXPECTED THAT!!
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE AND WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!
AGAIN I AM SO VERY SORRY HUN!! {{{{HUGZ}}}}
trouble

Don't forget about a deno virus, Dr. J......
As it was the folks who successfully tracked adenovirus outbreaks in bearded dragons in the US to animals purchased from F uker Farms and RR who "broke" the coccidia story.
A den o vir us dragons are particularly susceptible to coccidia and a den o has been traced to RR, so every owner of a coccidial dragon from RR now has a dragon that is highly suspect as a carrier of a deno virus as well.
Patti

The only true thing he said is that we have a really nice reptile community here.....
Whats he talking about, no one else has recieved sick babies??? I was in a chat where he was told about them. Doesn't he read the forums? *sigh* Or does he mean, none of the babies shipped to pet shops are ever sick??
Aly

Most carriers show no symptoms at all......
http://www.reptilerooms.com/adeno.php
Patti

Enough of the stuff here with rr..its bullcrap!sending sick and weak ones!thats just not right.I believe there sending us the sick ones and holding out on us with the healthy ones!
Josh

well, they aren't sending healthy ones to paying clients...
as the ever-increasing pile of frozen DOA carcasses can attest.
Perhaps there are no healthier stock available? Just my suspicion, though.
Patti

I know this may sound cruel but at least it is a blessing that it was over quick and you and he did not spend months suffering through one problem, only to find there was another far serious one and the heartbreak of watching that devastate and destory it slowly til you had to have it put down
All animals are precious, one day or 8 months, as I told one of ours that had the same problems that are mentioned on here(from the same place)in his memorial at 8 months:
Thank you Mickey for the priviledge of knowing you for the past 8 months and all the joy you gave us. I wish we could have had more time together, but it was not meant to be.
Cheri

George, you know I love you :-).
FOr those of you who are wondering, or those of you who didn't post because you wondered, or whatever. George is a good friend of mine, and he's kept animals for a long long time. He keeps over 100 snakes, and has many other bearded dragons. So for those few of you, and I know your out there from a post or 2, there is no way under the sun that any of thisd was his fault.
The blame for this rests entirely on the shoulders of fluckers, and even thouh I was one of the biggest supporters of the site and such, you don't mess with my friends. They don't want me this pi$$ed off....

i was hoping that everything you guys said about Reptile Republic sending in sick animals wasnt true, but it was. one of his eyes came in messed up. he isnt even eating. other than that he was fine. but his sh*t did look a little funny. i think it might be worms. is there anything that treats worms such as coccidia? anything that i wouldnt have to go to the vet for? any suggestions thanks!
Raul

So sorry, this really hurts
so much to see so many going thur the same initial stages we did with one of these babies from the same place, knowing also what MAY lay ahead, I am not saying that you will for certain, but the coccidea and worms, were just the start.
Cheri

I am so sorry....
PLEASE take your beardie to the vet ASAP! As Patti said, it is the only way to save it.
All these poor sick babies.... It just make me want to cry!
Aly

I'm very sorry, only a vet can truly help this poor baby....
but I do suggest you call the attorney general's office in your state to file a complaint. It is illegal to send sick animals into your state if you live anywhere in the US or its territories.
They might be able to help you arrange for low cost or free vet care as part of an investigation.
Patti
_____________

Mr. Howard F. Why??
Why are you guys sending out sick bearded dragons? I imagine you have hundreds of B.D.'s there, are they all sick? You have a vet right there, why isn't he out taking care of the B.D.'s?
I can only speak for myself but I would guess most everyone here would rather see Dr.J taking care of the animals instead of talking on the phone.
Everyone who gets a sick B.D. (Here or from a pet store) is disappointed and sad. But whats even worse than the people being disappointed, is the baby beardies who end up dieing. They don't have to die! You have a vet right there to take care of them!
Please stop this contest, stop supplying pet stores and get the B.D.'s well. This web site is great, the people who come here to talk and give advice are awesome! They arn't going to just go away if you stop the contest. In fact you will gain LOTS of respect if you take care of the sick animals and stop sending them out to die.
Sorry this is so long.... But I am very sad to see all the reports coming in of sick, injured, weak and dieing babies...
Please reconsider what you are doing.
Aly

I completely agree!
I would rather not get the beardie I won, if it is not healthy! I would still come to this site. The people and the knowledge are a great resource (not to mention, fun). Please do something about this.
Thank you.
LizardDude

The reason their Vet is not out there taking care of these animals is he's a cattle Vet. Dr.J told me himself he spent eight years as a Vet for Dairy Cattle. He is only twentyseven, twentyseven minus eight does not leave much time for reptile experience.
Dr.J recommended cleaning up after a B.D. with Coccidia every three days or so. My answer to that was, Coccidia is spread through the feces of a Dragon, therefore it should be cleaned everyday. His answer to that was, not everybody has that kind of time.
Correct me if I'am wrong, you have to feed your Dragon everyday, right? How much longer does it take to grab a papertowel or some toilet paper and scoop up some cr@p? NOT MUCH!
I SAY GET YOUR VET OFF OF THE PHONE AND THE INTERNET AND INTO SCHOOL! Reptiles do not have udders so Cattle experience does NO good! If you don't know anything about reptiles leave their care to someone else and don't give advice on them.
I have to have a beer and cool down, this subject gets me steamed!
I'AM OUT,
Podunk

I'm the one who "Dr.J" told to scoop the coccidia infested feces every three days or so. I'm a new B.D. owner and I even thought that "advice" was way off! How in the *ell would a B.D. ever recuperate if the coccidia parasite was laying around it's habitat for three days? Even though I'm smart enough not to use that "advice" some others may not be and a B.D. will perish! Thanks to Jeremiah, and his posted websites, I've become even smarter about the coccodia parasite.
Leibold

________________

For all of you continuing to accept the beardies, think about this, if someone offered you a puppy from a puppy mill would you accept it??? and bring it in your home knowing there was a very high chance it may be infested with something, I would think a lot of you wouldn't. If people continue to accept dragons from the site, they will keep producing them, if you think you are saving a dragon by accepting it as a prize think of the long run. Think about how many they will keep producing. If I were to win which I wouldn't because I live in Canada, I would simply not accept and make it known that I chose not to for the many previous reasons mentioned. It surprises me that people have accepted dragons saying if it weren't for this they wouldn't have been able to afford one, the beardie is the lest of the expenses when setting up a tank and the fixtures etc. I think if you can't afford and let's face it I'm trying to flame anyone here but times can be hard...if you can't afford the animal you shouldn't own one. If everyone bands together and refuses the free dragon they might think twice. Just a few thoughts.
Lauren

I agree.....
and I will not accept one if I win *UNLESS* they change this. They shouldn't be sending out sick babies....these babies shouldn't even be sick...

Okay, I give up. I have been one of the biggest supporters this place had. Not only here at this place, but elsewhere. I don't truely feel I can do that anymore. Not because this place isn't good with a great bunch of people, but because of the machinations behind the place. You say you put up this place to educ ate people about anim als. Well you've certainly done that. We all know much more about bear ded dra gons in a bad way than we ever wanted to. You know, I breed dra gons, I ship my babies. I have NEVER EVER had a single problem like this. Can you explain why you have had 10, 20 30 or more that we don't know about? You want to edu cate, yet you remain stoically silent as we sit here and comfort out friends who have lost babies, or who are compiling huge bills that they cannot afford. How is this educa tional? ANd how does this show sup port for the forum you designed. If you don't like what we say, you delete it. Or ce ns or it so it can never be said. Isn't free speech protected under the const itution here in the US? And yes, I know you live HERE, so I know you know the concept. I will stay, for now, to help the many friends I have made here, and the friends who you contacted like me from other places with the promise of a great community for reptile lovers. I can't say I will defend this place anymore. Can't say I will tell people to come check it out. It took me forever just to post this simple, polite statement because I used im prop er language? I was an English major, and I gurantee that I know how to write, and there was nothing imp rop er in this post. I guess I will sit here and watch it die. Just like a couple of my friends have done with their dra gons.

This morning my little dragon licked some of the baby food mush from the eye dropper and this time she actually kept it all down. I was so happy!
But now she is breathing funny... it's like a heavy breathing. She is laying on the basking branch with her head resting on the branch also and every breath she takes lifts her head off the branch!
Is there anything I can do to help her?? This is just making me sick. I feel so bad for her! If I take her back to the vets, can they do anything at all??
Aly

The first, and most likely, is that the parasites are producing gases and other toxins and your baby is bloated. Since lizards don't have diaphragms they cannot burp it up. Also, without the muscular wall in between chest and belly cavities, a bloated gut can mechanically press on the lungs, making breathing difficult. A warm soak to try and get your baby to poop may relieve this.
The second possibility is that the parasites have travelled to the lungs and are causing a more direct breathing problem. Lungworms, flukes, and roundworms are primary suspects here but most other worms can travel if the animal is getting weak.
The third possibility is that you received one of the F uker's ade no vir us dragons. A de no vi rus commonly colonizes the lungs and causes respiratory infections.
If a warm bath (around 98 degrees) doesn't help this baby quickly, please call your vet.
Patti

Can you tell me more about the adeno virus?
Anthony

Cheri S has a website about it....
http://www.reptilerooms.com/adeno.php
She has firsthand experience as she bought an RR dragon which had been infected with the vi rus since birth
Patti

Ok, I gave her a nice warm soak...
She didn't even move or open her eyes... :(
She didn't poop in the water. I dried her off and set her back in the basking spot. She isn't breathing as heavy now, its a lot slower and shallow.
I checked her belly and there are no yellow spots. But she is so .... hmmm... lifeless?
I am going to call the vet back.
Aly

Ok back from the vet and I have some questions...
I couldn't get another fecal sample checked since my beardie decided she didn't want to 'go' for me. But the vet checked her out (I don't really know if it is a she, it's just easier than typing she/he).
He said she is dehydrated and very weak. He showed me how to 'make' her open her mouth and he gave her some water. He said if I can do that with her 3 or 4 times a day "maybe" she will turn around, but he couldn't say she would for sure.
Aly

My box from the first contest has a big sticker saying Reptile Republic LIVE Harmless Captive Bred Lizards. Lots of nice air holes. He was even in a little reptile bag inside the plastic take-out container. The Newspapers inside are foreign, interesting reading, well - interesting to look at, I can't read them. No mention of El Salvador on the box, no stamps or stickers from Customs
Lyn

Didn't TurtleGirl get hers in the first contest?
I might be wrong, but I thought she had. Hers died a few days ago... :(
The box mine came in does say "Live harmless lizard" on it. One of the papers Fed-ex had said it came from a cricket farm though.
Aly

Ditto - Return address is F.Farms in Miami

Well, I won a dragon in the first contest, and while I don't actually post much, I do come here and read often.
As soon as I got the baby I took her to a vet (mine was on vacation) and the fecal checked out ok. This weekend she started having what looked like seizures to me. She shakes and holds her legs stiffly. And of course this is labor day weekend, so I have to wait until tomorrow to take her to my regular vet.
I'm very worried about her, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me? Thank you.
Draconem

Sept 2, 2002
Sorry to not have given you any specs before, I was feeling a bid addled last night..
Anyways, yes I do feed her dusted crickets every third day, and she has UV and a heat mat under her tank. The hotest part is 105F. She isn't shedding, although she has already done so, and that shed was a very good one (I came home and it looked like she had exploded all over the tank). She has a UV light and a basking light too.
I have other beardeds (7) and an incubator full of eggs that I am worried about contracting something. I'm taking fecals of EVERYONE to the vet today, and I'll let you all know how it goes.
Draconem

She has coccidia
I am treating her with Albon. a couple of my others do too, but not as much. The vet said she was loaded with it, but that everyone should recover well.
I am now going to give the little girl dusted crickets every day instead of every three.

HELP: COCCIDIA STILL ! !
My Beardies still have coccidia! Took them to the vet. with fresh fesces since one of them was having trouble with goopy eyes and has been acting sick. She found that they still have coccidia. The one Beardie that is acting healthy has the most! Figure that out! Now my vet. is not sure what to do since the Albon they were on the last time darn near killed one of them. She doesn't want to put them through that again. She is going to do some research, ask around to her peers and then get back with me. Do any of you know of a safer and effective treatment for this parasite? I have been cleaning and disinfecting like mad so I know they are not getting reinfected. Please help! Sorry this is so long
Leibold

We know several that had problems for months ridding it in RR beardies,(inculding me) and the more you use conventional treatment, the more resistant it gets.
And yes, it is rough on them, but if you don't get it down, you will lose them in a far worse way. There are things you can do to help them deal with the treatment better
Also, please note, sometimes the coccidia is a problem that is stemming from something else. Looking in medical info sites on bearded dragons virus and fungus will give you more info and other symptoms to watch for
Below again is the link we did of a treatment recommended by Roger Klingerberg and many of the University researches, that finally did work to rid/ or lower the count to 10% which is minimal and does not need treating. You can print it out and take to your Vet, she should recognize the name.
Its more than just the meds, there are several other things that needs to be followed to stop reinfection and to support your beardie through the treatment

I would like to thank everyone who has enjoyed our contest but due to recent posts in the Bearded Forum we have temporally decided to suspend the contest until we can check the health of all of our Bearded Dragons here at the Reptile Republic.
Thank You,
Howard Fluker
Reptile Republic

Thus ended a little over a week in the life of Reptile Republic, Fluker's and their entry into the bearded dragon business. But what has the many animals have been sent into the United States with a host of problems, going to cost us, the owners and breeders of these remarkable animals?

I've been blocked from Reptile Republic's website since August, not just me but most of the available IP addresses at my internet provider.

Does this mean I'm dangerous? ;)

They of course would prefer to make me look bad rather than their own husbandry techniques. I notice that they are advertising for a new reptile manager:

http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9665

One can only hope that this means they are finally willing to invest in proper hygiene, caging, and environments for bearded dragons to avoid further contagion. Based on the salary, however, I'm not very hopeful. An experienced breeder can hope to command a much higher salary than that.

I "won" two of those beardies. The first one is still healthy and happy nearly a year later. The second one was really tiny when I received him and he only hung on for a few weeks before dying. Now I am afraid to buy another dragon, because I am afraid my "healthy" dragon may actually be a adenovirus carrier.
