I am going to be getting tile soon and I know my dimensions and all but how am i supposed to ask them to cut it so that I can take it out because I cannot keep it exactly to that size. Also, do I need to measure the inside of a tank or the outside; does it make a difference?

Measure the inside so you know exactly how big the tile will have to be. If it is glass, keep in mind that the silicon caulking is going to make it hard to get tiles in and out, so make them slightly smaller. Just do the math on how big the tiles have to be, and most Home Depot or Lowe's will cut it for you with no problem.

23.8 inches long and 12 inches deep. So how much smaller should they be cut?

Just a little bit smaller, being European, I'd say just a few mm! Don't worry if you get them too small - fill any gaps with some play sand underneath which will help to keep any bugs slipping in there

so how many mm? around may 3 mm from each the top and the side of one of them? or do that for both but only the top and 1 side?
