My leo Blink is gonna be 4 this summer and for his entire life, ate nothing but crickets (and the occasional wax worm). I've offered him mealies and supers before, multiple times, and even a pinkie, but got nowhere fast.

Some, however, may remember me posting about how I tricked him into eating a couple supers by letting him "smell" a wax worm, then switching it out for a super. This would only last for twice and then he'd go back to demanding his crickets.

Not tonight though! He wouldn't eat at all this past week because I wasn't around (graduation move) and the week before, he ate maybe two crickets. So I knew he was hungry. I calcium coated a couple supers just for kicks and he went nuts! He ate them like he'd been eating them all his life! I was so happy! If this keeps up, I won't have to keep crickets on hand all the time! Don't know if it was hunger or the prior teachings or both, but I was very excited biggrin.gif

That's brilliant! Whatever the reason behind it, it's great news for both you and Blink that he's finally given into supers. He can have a bit more variation in his diet and you get a break from crickets. 8)

Yay!
Hey, thanks for posting that suggestion. I recently got silkworms (my gecko is so spoiled she thinks crickets are too much work, so I wanted something other than mealies) and at first she would lick them and turn away (what a snob wink.gif ). So I remembered your post, and she totally fell for it! You're a genius! smile.gif

It depends on how many your animal eats. I havne't bought any yet, because a pet store near me doesn't stock them. here is a link to there sight
http://www.phoenixworm.com/servlet/StoreFront

They come in little containers an i think they ae $5 or so for the container of them. Tehy are also called "calcium worms" if i am not mistaken

They are expensive when you consider how tiny they are - even the large size aren't as big as mealworms. They are also a big 'hit or miss' feeder with leos. Phoenix Worms is a registered trademark name, Calci-grubs is another one but it is the same beast. I only had one leo who would even go near them, the rest just turned their nose up at them.

Good job with making him go for supers! My leo raul was addicted to waxworms for two months and wouldn't eat. Finally he gave in and ate crickets.

As with Phoenix worms, don't buy the bulk order of like 1000 or something. Just by the smallest amount possible, because most geckos turn their noses up at them. The only gecko I have that likes them is an african fat tail that will eat anything.

I tried phoenix worms once too. He ate one, then would have nothing to do with them again *sighs* I would love for him to eat them because I know how healthy they are. But I'm happy for this now so I won't get too greedy wink.gif
