Hiya all,
I have owned two leos before, one made it to the age of ten before passing away from a organ failure. The second unfortunately had an eye infection when I got him and not much could be done.
My cousin and her boyfriend are separating and need someone to take their female adult gecko so that's where I come in!
Couple questions.
I have always used sand or bark and want to steer clear of this now so I am going to use tiles as she is bit older.
I have a 24L x 12.5W x 14H vivarium I will be using with most likely a home built screen mesh lid as the wooden lid it came with is rather flimsy and I don't trust it.
For heating I have a 14watt heat lamp I was going to use. What I wanted to know is would this be enough to provide the correct heat. My worry is that if the heat matt is under the vivarium it has to get through a sheet of glass as well as a tile and wasn't sure if this would work or not.
If heat matt is not ideal for using with tiles what wattage heat lamp do you guys recommend. I will be getting a thermostat but for temporary time I have a digital thermometer I will be using.
Also as using tiles was thinking of making multiple levels to make most of space. What do you guys use for attaching tiles to the glass?
Thanks in advance guys! |

First off you know better than to bump on this forum
A heat matt is preferable and will work fine through glass and tile. Leos need belly heat for digestion and just don't get enough from a heat lamp. A thermostat is a must as is a digital thermometer to double check as the probes for thermostats are notoriously inaccurate. To help maximise the heat into the tank, put a sheet of polystyrene under the tank and put the heat matt between it and the glass - it helps to divert heat upwards as the polystyrene acts as an insulator. On it's own it should heat the viv perfectly well but you can use the heat lamp for additional heat if need be.
Can't help with the levels thing as I haven't done it myself. There is a thread of tanks and there are tidbits of information about levels on it. Find it here:
