There is a Reptile Expo this coming Saturday that my boyfriend will be going to, and well, he says he wants a new gecko. He wants something other then a leopard, since we already have 2. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good gecko to get, or any tips on making sure we pick out a healthy one? Any help would be awesome. We also want one that we can handle, and honestly, i don't know which ones can and can't be held.

A crested gecko or a gargoyle gecko. They're both great geckos. Trust me you won't stop at one, I currently have 3 rhacs, and looking to get more laugh.gif
I started with crested geckos, then got a gargoyle but to be honest it doesn't really matter which you decide on. If you eventually get both, you wouldn't regret it. Cresties tend to be more energetic, they love to climb and jump. Gargs are about the same, but they don't tend to be as flighty. Cresties are more social than gargs, you can put more than one in a cage. The only time you would want to put more than one garg in a cage is when breeding. Gargs are known to bite their cagemate's tail and eat it. That's one difference with gargs and cresties, a garg's tail will grow back, but a crestie's wont. This doesn't affect the crestie in any way though.

They are both arboreal geckos, so you will need a cage that's tall. If you decide to get a baby rather than a juvenile, you can start out with a 10 gal until they reach about 5 months old. Eventually you can put them in a 20 gal tall or get an 18x18x24 exo terra, glass or screen. You can house up to 3 cresties in an 18x18x24 exo terra. These geckos can climb glass.

Here's advice I gave someone else on selecting a healthy rhac.

(Tiny_Hendrix)
Healthy hatchlings are very alert and very fast. So that's exactly what I would look for when buying one. I actually held off on handling my female until she's the age she is now, 5 months. One because they're very fast, and two because of how fragile they are at that age, they are more prone to drop their tails at that age. I just did the usual health checks (monthly weighing) and cage cleanings. Also they are very good eaters. Mine took a special interest in crickets. If possible, I'd definitely see how good of a eater he is. Examine the belly and vent of the gecko. A healthy gecko has pretty good sized, rounded belly, make sure you don't see any ribs (that look like he hasn't been eating). If he has caked or smeared feces around his vent, don't buy him, that's a possibility of a gastro-intestinal disease. Check his tail, there shouldn't be any kinks in his tail, if there is, that can be a sign of calcium deficiency. I would also take a look at his feces. It should be pretty solid, black and have some white on the end (urates) if it's smelly and runny, he most likely has parasites. That can be taken care of by a vet, but if it were me I would make them take care of it before I bought him.

One more thing, since you have other reptiles, when you buy the little guy make sure you quarantine him for at least 60 days. When feeding your other reptiles, feed him last. Never recycle food, such as crickets from one gecko to another. Also make sure when you handle him, wash your hands before touching or handling another reptile. If he has any disease, you don't want to spread it to the rest of your colony.

Note: Both are nocturnal, so since the expo is during the day they probably won't be moving much as they might be sleeping. When I say to view if they're active, that's asking to hold one and see if he's very active then.
