K...i went to the vet for my beardie cuz he has an inflamation infectious looking thing on his "lips"

so whatever i got some baytril to give him as well as antiseptic to bathe him in daily.....(also blood work and culture test.....for like $200!!!!! - i think she took me for a ride  )

anyhoo....the vet noticed his femoral pores and said they looked clogged or swollen or too big or whatever

she then proceeded to REMOVE all of them

now he has like 10 gaping holes in his legs!!?!?!

reading up on this after the fact it doesn't seem this was necessary??

she said to make sure i soak him more regular to keep the femoral pores soft or whatever

any insight here??

Beardies should have access to soak at least once a week, more often if they enjoy it and it does allow the femoral pores to stay softer and not impact which they can do. If they do it can be very major and live threatening and i have seen more than one lose a leg from it.

What also helps is having a rough area such as a branch or rough surface basking area that they can rub their legs on. Males use those pores to scent mark their territory and let females know there is a mature male in the area to breed with and other males to warn off their territory.

Without seeing what they looked like I can not comment on whether they needed to be cleared out or not. When taking in rescues this is a common thing I see in the males but on most I have only had to clip them back with surgical sissors and then a rough branch or stone that they file them down smoother on.

Right now just watch that since they are so open, they do not get substrate or feces in them which causes infection that can be dangerous. You can also soak his legs in some peroxide.

hey thanks!
weird thing is the vet called yesterday to say that he has high calcium levels which may indicate that he is a she???

weird

currently i'm soaking him/her daily in warm water with a couple drops of antiseptic as well as a quick swipe of antiseptic in the mouth and baytril antibiotic drops

he's not really eating but i guess that's to be expected with the daily medical attention!

I seriously doubt if the femoral pores where large enough they needed cleaning, that your beardie is a female unless there were infected. Did she tell you what the calcium levels were? Phosphorous too?

With the baytril, that really does put them off food, but you also need to get some probioitics in him to help his stomach deal with the lose of good bacteria in his gut, you can buy that through reptilesuppy.com or get some powder or tablets at a health food store and add a pinch of that to some gatorade or water and syringe that to him also

Did she do a fecal? that is the first place we look when there is mouth sores

No she did not tell me the exact calcium levels...only that they were high.

I'll look into the priobiotics....i guess yogurt wouldn't do?

worst thing is is that this guy (or girl) will NOT eat veggies to begin with. so by avoiding his worms and crix he's really starving himself!

doctor didn't do a fecal - only bloodwork and a mouth culture.

geez....i'm already almost 2 weeks into this and his sore has not gotten any better sad.gif
