Six critically endangered Grand Cayman Blue Iguanas were killed by unknown persons late on Saturday evening, in the QE II Botanic Park. The crime was discovered by volunteers with the National Trust's Blue Iguana Recovery Programme, shortly after 9am on Sunday morning.

The iguanas appeared to have massive internal injuries, as if they had been stamped on violently and repeatedly. Some were also cut and partially dismembered. Three were found dead inside their breeding pens, two had been carried out of their pens and left in the tour area outside. The body of the sixth is still missing, but entrails on the trail outside his pen are a grim sign of his fate.

This is so tragic - WARNING THE LINK HAS A PHOTO OF THE DEAD IGGIES, nothing too graphic but may upset some people.

OMG, that's horrible! I don't know why anyone would do that! I mean, it's a freakin Iguana, what would those maniacs have against them! And they are endangured. So pretty too. Plus on a tour site! Absolutely horrable. That still bothers me that who in the world would have something against a endangured, beautiful, REPTILE! Dang.

It is scary that they went to all the effort to break in and kill them - it has so much calculation in it. Its sickening.

Yeah, I mean, they planned this whole thing out. Jeez, tragic. Makes me even more angry, good point.

I don't see how anyone could get thrills by killing a harmless animal. Not to mention those Iguanas are pretty well tame, they didn't have a fighting chance seeing as they wouldn't get defensive at first around humans. This world is becoming sicker by each day.

Oh, that is disgusting! Who the heck does that? People are working so hard to save these beautiful creatures and now this. I'm actually crying out of sadness and anger and frustration with the world. It just reminds me why I want to work with animals for a living and not human beings.

That is extremely upsetting but it doesn't surprise me. There are all kinds of strange and messed up people that get thrills from all kinds of crap. There are so many possibilities as to why whoever did this did it.. I hope they catch whoever it was and face the maximum sentence for EACH iguana killed.
