Hi.
I registered here a few months ago but never made a first post or anything because it's been a long time since I last owned a reptile, but I drop by to read the threads sometimes. Ten years ago my small apartment had as many as 16 lizards plus a snake and fish at any given time. As they were sold or died I let the hobby fall to the side and my last leopard gecko expired of old age 4 years ago. It took until January to give up on the idea of getting something new--I always wanted to try Bearded Dragons--but I finally put the last tank in the garage. Then tonight I went out to the car for something and almost stepped on the most beautiful corn snake I have seen in a long time. It's got to be over 30" long and looks to be in perfect condition. I've never seen a wild one here in San Antonio Texas, so right now I'm thinking it's an escaped pet but will be doing more research ASAP. We have plenty of big Texas Rat Snakes around here--6 footers that are mean and bite hard. That's what my girlfriend was expecting to see when I told her about catching a snake--then she saw it. GF: "I thought it would be ugly and brown or black or something, but it's two shades of orange and just so pretty....damnit! Now I can't hate it, and might have to live with a snake in my house." I'm going to try and find it's owner, but in the meantime I'm digging-out an old tank and top and lights and hide and substrate etc so it can live comfortably within a few hours. And I'll be sure to take lots of pictures. I hope I get to keep it. Always thought Corns were the prettiest and regret not owning one before. |

Funny--we named it Candy Corn, but I think it's just a regular albino instead of one of the fancier morphs.
The front half of the snake is different shades of orange while the rear half is more reddish and shrimp colored. Pretty sure it's male. Just finished the first feeding, and it took a frozen adult mice like it had done it before--no hesitation, no constricting, just crept up and sniffed it then started swallowing it down. Took about 12 minutes. That's a relief--I would prefer using frozen. But I'll try a live mouse someday just to see if he remembers how to strike and constrict and because I want to watch it in action. |

Cool name
And glad to hear "he" ate. Does this mean you are probably getting to keep him? |

Yes, it's a done-deal as far as keeping Candy.
Letting my girlfriend name him was pretty smart if I do say so myself. She didn't watch the feeding but finally worked-up the courage to look at the pictures tonight. Didn't scream or barf so it looks like we're cool. She's already starting to brag to her friends and family about it. I think the idea of a snake in the house makes her feel cool and kinda tough compared to everyone she knows, and that's working in my favor. Now I just need to work on setting-up my 20 gallon long tank, since the 20tall I'm using doesn't have enough real estate for an adult corn. The main wood decoration/hide doesn't leave enough space for a water dish that'll allow bathing--just drinking--and I understand corns like to take a dip sometimes. It's been a long time since I got to play with all of my tanks and lights and wood and rocks--it has been a fun and gratifying process and this time I get to add photography to the experience. |
