After browsing the UK forum I decided to take one of Luke's threads and put a twist on it. A little Canadian feeder survey.
What are you currently paying for the following and where are you purchasing them: Crickets Silkworms Mealies Supers Other Is shipping included? How do you feel that company could improve and what do you believe their already doing right? |

I pay around 25$ for a thousand crickets which I may do once a month. About 70$ for 500 butterworms which I feed over 3-4 months and Rodents I can spend up to 200$ a month as I do not always produce enough rodents to feed my snakes. (Especially now, since I am at school and in a dorm.) All other feeders I produce myself but I would guess that it would cost me 10-50$ a month to keep up with supplies. And I would not even want to think about how much it would cost me to feed with roaches if I did not breed them myself.

wschipper - where are you ordering your feeding from?
I personally pay $30 for 1000 crickets, but I buy them locally and therefore I pick them up. -------------------- Jenn

Thanks wschipper - when I priced them out they came to about 35 with shipping for 1000 - I will have to double check that now
I just realized that I forgot to answer the second part of your question Tux: I buy my crickets from a local private reptile store. As for how they could improve, I would like a more steady supply. The crix come in on Thursday, but they are late sometimes and I have to wait around for the cricket guy to deliver. Once they didn't show up until Friday, but this is all fixable and they more then make up for this with service. When you think about it, 1000 crix twice a month is 60 bucks. I have found in the past that some feeder suppliers don't value your business, especially if they run a store as well. The purchase seems small to them in comparison to a cage or an animal for a few hundred. However, over the long run I spends thousands on crickets, and in reality when I go somewhere for crix, I usually buy something else too while I am there. I think that customer service is key, and that is why I like the place I go to. I like small mom and pop reptile stores b/c they are more personal. This store is also good b/c the price is also the best in town and the crickets are super healthy and correctly sized (I hate when I order 1000 1/2 and get 500 1/2 250 1/8 and a bunch of 1 inchers, lol....this has happened in that past with other suppliers that are not size-consistent). I can’t stress the importance of receiving properly sized crickets, especially when you are feeding them to hatchlings and smaller species. -------------------- Jenn

I usually buy other items with the crickets so shipping is minimized but if I were just to buy crickets it would come out to being a similar amount to what you pay.

I buy my crickets at the local pet shop and I am paying $22.00 for 500. Does anyone know where to buy them by the thousand locally near Hamilton or Simcoe Ontario area. I can't have them delivered because most days no one is home to receive the package.

A decent feeder company will pay the extra to require the package to be signed for therefore not needing you to be home at time of delivery.

$0.16 a cricket at Petland! I breed my own though, because if I paid 16 cents for a cricket Id deserve to be shot in the head and drug behind a truck from coast to coast.

(wschippr) Canadianfeeders, they are most likely the best feeders in ontario.
i dont think so he is the only online feeder store that will only sell what he wants . i know i tried to order over 250 hornworms he told me he can not sell that many to me with out a buisness permit .i guess my reptiles are not aloud to eat till they are full .i have asked all the dealers online not one of them told me i can only buy a so much. it just do not understand ? |

For a great online store I highly recomend http://www.canadiansilkworms.com/catalog/ Brandy is wonderful to deal with and her quality is the best I have ever seen and I only pay $20.00 for 1000 crickets. She has alot of different choices.

 Really? I have never had that kind of a problem with that, but then again I do not really order hornworms. Maybe I will try and see if I get the same response, I remember a while back they had a shortage of insects and that could explain why he did not want to sell too many to one customer, but I have not heard anything from anyone else. I have never experienced any problems with them. |
