Full Version: To the Python Owners
The Reptile Rooms > Snakes > Other Pythons

I do not claim to be an expert in any way, but I just want to let ya know that Pythons are "My Thing" and I am more than happy to help anyone.

I notice ALOT of BP owners out there. My first snake was a 1.0 WC 01' Male BP. He would not eat for the life of me, and he had a horrible case of ticks (BLAH.) After 6 long months of not eating and about 1 month getting rid of ticks, he turned out to be a great pet! Unfortunately I moved this summer and had to get rid of my collection.

I do not own anything right now, but plan on owning and breeding the following:

- Reticulated Pythons
- Burmese Pythons
- African Rock Pythons
- Ball Pythons
- Boa Constrictors

I have experience with all of the above except Retics and Arocks. So they will be new comers to me:)

Thanks,

I'm sure all the rescues in the country will be very pleased to hear that. I mean this in the best way. PLEASE dont breed these snakes. While YES they are easy to sell as babies, but to Whom are you going to sell them to? The vast majority of people that buy these snakes have no clue what they are getting into.

Definately Breed the Ball Pythons. Any help out there to curb the w/c market is very much needed. reasons BP come into rescue is people get tired of dealing with the pickiness of a w/c animal. But they are of manageable size so that homes can be found for them.

Same goes with boa, even though it seems everyone and their uncle is breeding boas. I have 4 females going this year alone.lol But even a placid 8' snake is allot easier to find a home for than an 18-20' snake.

Very well put Ed.... I agree 100%
I am even borderline on the breeding of BCI's.... there are a TON of them out there in the rescues. I have a pair of Colobians together this season for the experience only and you better believe that I am going to be very particular as to where the babies, if there are any, will go.

I knew somethng sounded familiar. Is this Don?
You had a burm and you had to get rid of it WHY on EARTH Would you go and get Retics Now?

I'd have to agree about breeding Burms, Retics, and Rocks. Actually all of those snakes are so over bred that there are literally thousands of them in rescue centers across the country. It's a waste to breed more of them when they will probably just end up in a rescue center after living in filth and starving. There are just too many large snakes that need homes already to go and breed more that will almost undoubtedly end up in the same situation.

I agree with you two. After thinking it over it will be quite hard.

I am sticking to the Ball Pythons though for sure, and am still going to get a pair of Retics. I was thinking of investing in some het albinos and such (ball pythons.)

I had to make a very sudden (within 1 week) move to arizona...unfortunately when i was out there...my dad gave it to our friends. FORTUNATELY they BOTH work at the zoo...the one coordinates the reptile house. He is in good shape.

Instead of ranting on about what was going on...ill just say that I am here to stay. I am going to a local college (Pitt) so I will be living at home during college.

I truely dont want any trouble.....I just want to talk reptiles and such.

PS - Thanks for making it aware to me how horribly hard it would be to find homes for all those babies ( at least SUITABLE )

About two months ago I adopted an 8' BCI boa. I could adopt one a week if I wanted to. Seeing very large snakes on Animal Planet and actually keeping one are very different things. I have owned several snakes, mostly colubrids and boas and never had the desire to have a snake so large that I would need a second job to feed or that may be dangerous to myself or others. Breed Balls and colubrids. There are too many big snakes that are unwanted along with a ton of Green Iguanas that no one wants.

i dont know why people think that just because they have owned a few snakes that they are ready for the big snakes. retics are a handful. you obviously dont have enough expirience to own one. i keep retics and they require alot of money and work just to keep them in tip top shape.

I have owned a few snakes over the years and for the last few months I have had only Chica my 8' and still growing BCI. While being very docile, she still can be a handful. If I wanted more large snakes, I would be given at least one a week free. Please don't breed the BCI's, Rocks, Burms or Retics. Bigger is not better and there are too many that need good homes as is. If you want to own some, and can afford to feed them, more power to you.....just don't make any babies.
Thanks!
