I am looking a purchasing a Corn Snake in the near future and I was wondering what are the basic needs and information anyone can give a new owner different from the "knowledgebase" has given because I have read it 3times already?
Like best ideas of the snakes home and lighting sources......
If anyone can help me that would be awesome.
Thanks,
Dayna

for a baby :
a ten gallon tank.
an undertank heater
some kind of temperature controlling device.
water bowl large enough for soaking
2 hides
substrate- aspen, newspaper, repti carpet
digital thermometer, hygrometer

You don't really need the hygrometer, if your snake is having issues shedding just mist it or make it a humid hide with damp moss or papertowels.
A SECURELY LOCKING LID, just weighing it down will NOT work.
Lighting sources are uneccesary, just getting the light cycles through the window is enough for them. But if you insist on having a light make sure you either turn it off at night or put a red bulb in because corns can't see that.

Dan Sogerberg has a great book that you should give a read. It's a very infomative as it covers everthing that you could need to know as a beginner.

So your saying that if i put two ten pound dumbells on each side of the top the snake will still escape? Because that is what i would do.

my cage is not compatible with clips so i have a cinderblock on it. its broken so there is half on each side but i have a special stainless steel lid so it won't bend or give out and crush my snakes

Unless you have a special stainless steel lid like herp kid you're going to ruin the lid and possibly your snake in the process.
How hard is it to buy lock clips for $2? I never understood this.

YOU SAID WHAT I WAS THINKING, NOOB. THERE ARE A LOT OF HERP SITES THAT HAVE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLIPS, JUST GIVE A LOOK AT A FEW AND YOU SHOULD FIND SOME RELATIVELY EASY.

R Zilla critter cages have sliding-locking screen tops, that also have slots for temperature probes and such. Weighing down a top doesnt always work. You'll be suprised how strong they are. IMO the best cages have front sliding or downwards opening doors.

The 20L R-Zilla critter cages run from $53 to $60 from what I've seen at different places, but I have my corn in one and I can gaurantee you that she isn't going anywhere as long as I don't leave the top off by mistake. I'm in the process of building a rack system, though.

Yeah I've got one of those locking lids for my king

and then I have heavy duty clips on my corn's 55 gallon.

I have both R-zillas and aquariums with clips. The R-Zillas are really nice and not too expensive. I would rather buy a 20 long or 29 R-zilla right off the bat then start with a ten and move up. I have two corns (one in a R-zilla 20L and one in a R-Zilla 29) and they both do fine. Many people suggest too big of a tank will stress a baby but as long as you have substrate they can burrow in and a few small hides they are happy. The only problem I have with clips is that once I forgot to put them back on my BP tank after I had him out and didn't notice until the next day. Luckily he didn't try to escape.

Well in the same step, one time my bf forgot to lock the lid in all the way.
And my king did escape, for 12 hours.
