What would be a good alternative?

Also, does anyone know a good brand and/or website for a good filter for my other slider's 50gal tank?

Lose the rocks or go with ones that are larger than your turtles heads (and mouths), simple as that.
Probably look into getting a bigger dock soon so they won't compete for basking spots.

Is that a bit of pyramiding? Definately get them adjusted to balanced diet, even if they protest.

No idea about current filter brands, you can wait for biochic or tinkerbell to turn up or search for some turtle only forums.
