Full Version: Petco/Petsmart Safe to buy from?
The Reptile Rooms > Snakes > Corns & Rat Snakes

I read ALL the time that it shouldnt be in someones best interest to buy a corn snake from a petco or petsmart. And that they should buy from a breeder, although I will most likely buy online, I'd like to see who has and hasnt had problems with their snake from petco/petsmart.

Any replies would be great! Thanks!

Hmm.. I got my corn from a local petshop. I guess it's probably not the same as petco or petsmart... but I haven't had any big problems. We had an accident with his tail but it had nothing to do with the store he came from. Just his excess shedding that I wasn't careful enough to watch..

I did go to Petco the other day though and one of the girls was cleaning out the reptile tanks. She was very careful with them and they seemed calm and very well taken care of. I'm honestly not sure about them though and I hope this helps... though it probably won't. Good luck!

Wasnt the exact answer I was looking for, but it did help a bit, knowing that they treat them with care and it wouldnt be a stupid move to buy from there, cus im kind of hesitant to buy one online and have it shipped =(, and sorry bout ur little guys tail =( i was actually just reading ur thread about how its tail fail off =/

Well if it looks ok but go to a breeder for good results. Here take this www.cornutopia.com I know her she is nice and her corns are pretty.

It really depends on the store employees but overall a breeder is a safer choice.

i would never buy from a petco or petsmart. they don't properly take care of them. i have seen crickets in cornsnake cages there.

lol did they seriosly think that a snake would eat those or was it a escape from another cage.

I hope it was an escape, or they put the snake into a tank where a different animal was previously....

Every Petco and Petsmart is different. I've heard horror stories from some, but the ones in my town are pretty good. Yeah, I'm not exactly thrilled how they overcrowd almost all of the animals, but that's pretty much any big corporation. I just got my corn snake from Petco and she's doing very well. The employees I dealt with were very knowledgeable about their care.
