Full Version: Eggs!
The Reptile Rooms > Snakes > Corns & Rat Snakes
CalasCorns
Not the first female to lay this year by far, but I figured I'd post some pictures anyway---mainly because this particular clutch is one of the most exciting for me this year.

Her 17 eggs bring the total of the year up to 93, and with 3 more females to go I should hit the 120 range provided none of those remaining females slug out on me like one did a few weeks ago.

So for those of you who always ask, what's the average clutch size---9 females have added to that 93 egg total. My opal mot decided to give me a whopping clutch of like 16 eggs---but 13 were definitely slugs. I have 3 incubating---one of which is definitely a good eggs---but needless to say, consider the average to be about 12 eggs.

Anywho, here are the pics:

Now some of you might say...."Why in the heck would what appears to be a normal be your most exciting clutches?"

Good question, and here is why:

That would be a hypo sunkissed, and the picture is courtesy of Rich Z from SerpenCo. I bought two pairs of okeetees from him last year when he had his 'adult sale'. One pair was het sunkissed and charcoal, and the other was het hypo and sunkissed. The other okeetee female did her job---giving me a clutch of 16 perfect eggs---just what I need for that magical 1/16 probability for my sunkissed charcoal. Let's just hope that I get lucky and hatch out more than a few....

Congratulations! But mind if I ask what you do with them? Are you a breeder and you sell them?

I'm a small time breeder, yes. It's a hobby for right now. Last year I only had about 40 eggs---this year should be 3x that. So we'll see what happens this year in regards to how easily I'm able to sell those babies. If I can sell them fairly quickly, then I believe 'CalasCorns' will turn into more of a side business than it is a hobby. If I have to sit on snakes for 6 months before I can sell them, then I'll have to think about doing some scaling back.

However, after saying all of that, a big portion of this is just about hatching out some cool stuff and hopefully being able to pay food, hatchling, and heating costs.

Thanks Joe for the pics and info!

We've not gotten into breeding yet, just mainly focusing on keeping and caring for our snakes at the moment. I think maybe in another year we'll look into breeding some of ours.

Please keep us posted on your breeding stock and process.
