Full Version: Right size meal?
The Reptile Rooms > Snakes > Corns & Rat Snakes

I just moved my 6 month old Corn up to fuzzies. Opinions on suitability based on photo below? She downed it fairly easily except for the front legs being in the way. She took a slight pause on those. I stopped at just one, but she did seem more interested in it than the last couple of fuzzies.

I think I remembered not posting photos of reptiles eating their prey, so I hope this doesn't go too far.

As a side note...She's really deepening her colors nicely. I think she's gonna be stunning after growing a few more inches.

It looks fine, but it's hard to really judge unless you see a picture after the meal has been eaten.

You'll know if it was too big since it'll get gurged. If that happens, no feeding for 10-14 days and step down for the next meal. But a fuzzy seems to be the right sized meal for that snake.

Might try making a few snips in the skin going down the back to aid in digestion too.

Well, I have one of those too.

I guess it was too much. She regurged it last night. When I got the snake, the owner said she was almost ready for fuzzies then. That was the middle of January. I thought she'd be ready for it, but I guess I'll just keep her on the Pinkies for another month or so.

Has she ever regurged before? A fuzzy seems like it would be OK, especially if she swallowed it easilly.

LoL, the idea is to see a picture when the snake has fully swallowed the meal and it has settled in the stomach--not where the snake is still working it down.

But it looks fine. Give it about a month of fuzzies meals every 5 days and you'll probably be ready to bump it up in size again.

Yea..I went through her regurging twice a bit over a month ago. That's why I delayed this long to try her on a fuzzie. I wanted to make sure she was back to her usual 2 pinkies once a week feeding for a couple weeks first. She's been eating 2 pinkies every 6-7 days since late Novemeber with the exceptiong of rehabing from regurging. I thought that was behind us, but at least I'm not so paniced as I was last time. I'll just wait a good 10-14 days and start back with a 1/2 pinkie and work it back up again.

The pinkies I have look almost exactly her diameter and the fuzzies look about 1.5x her thickest diameter and about twice as thick as her narrowest spot behind her head. She didn't have much trouble getting the fuzzie down, only slowing for the front legs. I suspect she'll be good eating pinkies 'til her next shed or two, and I'll try her on a fuzzie then. I have 15 or so pinkies left in the freezer anyway.
