Full Version: I did a little bit too much research on feeding

...But every topic seems like a different answer, and in the end it sounds like some sort of ego measuring contest where my dad can beat up your dad etc (not really but i'm sure you get the point)....And now i have several different answers about feeding a juvie.

From searching here i found that one person, i believe it was CalasCorn was steadily increasing rates and size of prey items and using what i thought was a calcium dust and vitamin powder. Then I think it was Ash19 and Clementine refuting by saying something about just because it can eat that big of prey that often doesn't mean it's healthy. Likewise local pet stores and breeders do 1 pinkie a week, but don't recommend feeding more than that because it kills the animal.

Then searching other websites and care sheets they say feed an appropriate size prey, not much bigger than the girth at the largest point, when ever the waste is expelled. And some say to use a calcium/vitamin powder and some say it's not written in stone that you have to.

Now i'm lost, i've had Water Dragons for well over a year now and i've never had this much of a problem with info (but then again WD are a breeze to feed). So my question is, what side is best for my snake? Should i do the feeding after 3 days, or a week, or even something in between, or what ever i feel like doing? What's common practice here?

Thanks for your time, I'm very sorry about reposting this for hundredth time but my head really hurts and i don't know what to do, and i appologize for mixing people up or mis-spelling someones name or leaving someone out.

Well as for size we feed peaches prey items that are at max 1.5 times the largest girth. The recommended size is anywhere from the same size as the largest girth to 1.5 times the largest girth depending on who you talk to. Also feed your snake once a week, every 3 days while young is power feeding and can lead to problems. As a hatchling you can feed every 5 or 6 days if you like aswell. And once they are full grown anything less than a week to 10 days for a feeding will make your snake overwieght. You don't need calcium or vitamin dust, all the nutrients they need are in the mice. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much. Earlier today i talked to another breeder and he said something similar to what you posted.

Wait a second... You mean were only soposed to feed babys once a week? I heard that they are soposed to be fed twice a week. And that 3-5 times a week was power feeding... I am getting one in about a month or two and thought I had this down, now im real confused... Are babies soposed to be fed once a week or twice a week?

Thanks

As Lews said, babies can be fed once every 5 and adults every 7 days. That is considered a safe and prudent feeding schedule, assuming the prey is properly sized. Nothing bigger than 1.5 times the widest point of the snake's girth. There will be times when your snake is 'between' feeder sizes, in that case you may have to feed two smaller prey items until he is ready to move up to the next size. Corns are naturally slow growers, unlike pythons or boas so a more conservative feeding approach is wise. I have a two month old python and he is eating fuzzies every 5-6 days, he will grow faster than a corn but the schedule will be the same, it's the prey size that will change for him quicker.

Every 4-7 days for hatchlings is average. It just depends on you and your snake. What you want to do. Some feed every 3 days or as soon as the waste is expelled. Some feed once a week. The more often you feed, the faster the snake grows. Some disagree that this is powerfeeding. At which point powerfeeding comes into play, I have no idea. But this is what some corn keepers do. The size remains the same for everyone. 1.5x the largest point in girth of the snake is the right size. The argument was more so about how often. Joe (CalasCorns) is trying out a new feeding schedule that he got from a breeder. I don't think it's common pratice. But they're working on it, seeing how it goes. So I would try 4-6 for a newbie corn owner. That's the safest, guaranteed route to go for healthy care.

I was feeding my baby every 3 days, now she has 9 feedings in her and I have backed off to every 5 days or so.

I want to do what is best for the corn snake and if it means I cant play with it as much when its youngh that ok with me I just want it to be healthy and happy. So every 5 days is a good and healthy schedule?

Thanks!
