Full Version: How large of a terrarium

I was thinking about getting a bigger terarium for my adult corn. At what point does the size of the terarium begin to stress it out?
nkdZEPPELIN05
Anywhere between 40-90 gallons I believe. Just make sure there aren't a lot of wide open spaces so it doesn't look so empty.

I think a 40-55gal is good. Anything bigger will begin to stress him out. You'll need to put in plenty of hides, plants and branches so he'll feel secure. Mine's in a 40gal. But he really doesn't need anything that big. What size is the tank he's in now?

I really think this whole oversized terrarium stressing out a corn bit is total crap. So I'd go as big as you wanted.

I was reading those comments as well and thinking the samething? I also feel that this whole stressing the snake is overplayed in many cases.

yeah it seems like thats just one of those commonly regurgitated pieces of imformation thats not necessary true. Kinda like "ball pythons are picky eaters" as long as they have hides where they can feel secure., I had some baby corns in a cage that would be considered oversized and they were very calm, they just burrowed in their aspen a lot.

If that's true, then why does EVERYONE say a baby corn needs a 10gal and nothing bigger, otherwise they get stressed? Does that just apply to babies? And how come when I said I have my corn in a 40gal *someone* said they don't need tanks that large. that a 20gal will do?
CalasCorns
Snakes are wild--babies are not restricted to a space of a 10 gallon tank. I think as long as you have plenty of hides you can go bigger than a 10 gallon. If I still had my 20gallon tank I'd try it out with my soon to be hatchlings, but I don't.

And yes, most adult corns CAN live in a 20 gallon long and don't NEED anything bigger. There's no harm in keeping an adult in a 40 gallon.

should i go with a long terarium, or an aquarium style cage, so I can put in stuff for him to climb on?
nkdZEPPELIN05
I would get one a least a foot tall so you can put a branch in there for him to climb on and get exercise. Two feet should be the maximum height though. If he is long you will need more floor space, rather than height.

I have a home made viv that is 5'x2'x2' and i keep a yearling in there, he seems very happy and not at all stressed out smile.gif

I made sure he has a lot of hiding places to choose from and plenty of fake plants and vines so he feels safe. At night he's always out and about expolring evey bit of his home, climbing branchs and the fake rock back drop.

Im no expert but i dont think the size of the viv being too large is an issue, in the wild they have unlimited space but also unlimited places to hide so can always choose the ideal place to feel safe. i think as long as you have enough hides and the viv doesnt look empty you can go however big you want.

Just keep a look out for any signs of stress for the first few weeks until you feel sure he's happy

Good look.
