hi i am new to this site and i just got my first corn snake yesterday and im in love with it. its about 13 inches and i am goin to feed it its first pinky in a day or two...is there any thing special i need to know about them??
CalasCorns
The technical term is anerythristic motley, not black motley. Other than reading the normal care sheets and such, there's really nothing special.

Congrats on the new snake, and welcome to Reptile Rooms! Make sure you leave it alone for the first few days so it can get use to its new home!

Does the snake have a white belly, or are there black checkers?
MAtt!123
Beautiful snake black_motley!
black_motley
it has checkers
black_motley
lol i fed it its first pinky today and it didnt even kill it it just lined himself up and started to eat it .....is there somthing wrong with that??
CalasCorns
I thought it would. The snake is actually an anerythristc, and not a motley. Motleys do not have belly checkers. Sorry that someone mis-labeled the snake as an anery motley, but it's just an anerythristic.

Are you feeding live pinkies?
CalasCorns
Oh geez. There is nothing wrong with feeding live pinkies to snakes. Let's not get into a live versus f/t debate.

I know there is nothing wrong with feeding live. I just wanted to know. Sorry if it sounded like I wanted to start an arguement!
black_motley
lol yes i feed him live pinky mice........while were on the subject which is better to feed him.....live or frozen???
CornyGuy
This is what's going to become a huge debate.

It is comepletely your choice. I feed frozen, but plenty of people fed live. IMO f/t is way more conveniant and cheaper. Whenever it's time, just take them out of the freezer and thaw them out. And the freezing process kills all parasites that could be lurking inside. And when they are older, feeding on hoppers and adult mice, there is no risk of injury.

Live is more expensive, very frustrating to have to go to the store every week or so, and once the snake ages they might decide to refuse anything but live. Then you have to pay real close attention to be sure the mouse does no harm to the snake. Rodents can inflict some major wounds to an unsuspecting snake. Many have died from them. I would not want to take any chance with my snake's life.

Each have their own advantages, so it's up to you.

Depends what you personally feel comfortable with. Pinkies obviously can do no harm. But when they start to get older, that's when you need to be careful. Mice can and will hurt your snake, so if you want to feed live, just make sure to stick around and watch him while he eats, and be prepared to jump in there if something happens. With f/t, it may be easier and more convenient, as you can buy them in bulk, and they obviously can't hurt your snake.

Oops, CornyGuy, you covered pretty much what I said smile.gif

well i used to have a corn snake when i was younger, she was pretty big about 4 feet i think and i used to feed her two live mice a week and befor the mouse could do anything to harm my snake she would already be ontop of them to where they couldnt do anything anyways.....but now this has been mentioned i will have to pay a little more attetion to it, i would buy frozen but i like watching my snake eat them alive =p=p
