hi you guys i recently bought a heat pad the pad dosent really fit woudl i be able to cut it .
or woudl the rubber stoppers be able to be placedo n top of the heat pad..?
kelgrl65
don't think it can be cut, there are coils inside that heat up, you would break the circuit. I have mine under the stopper, it's not set too high that it would melt it. I also have repti carpet on top of the glass to absorb some of the heat so Zakk isn't directly touching the glass.
colombiano89
so it would be ok if i but the stoppers on top of the pad ??
kelgrl65
that's how i have mine. haven't had a problem with it. i do check once in a while, it looks fine. if I had remembered about the stopper i would have bought the smaller uth.
colombiano89
so your positive that nothining will happen to the tank.?
kelgrl65
not goin to make any gaurantees that nothing will happen in your tank, but so far mine has been ok. if you put the heat mat under the plug make sure you check on it frequently - or find something you feel safe to cover the hole with instead of the rubber stopper, maybe cover it with duct tape......i considered that!
colombiano89
ok so i will have the pad stuck to the bottom of the tank and then the ruber stoppers on top of the pad so it shoudl all be god eh lol
kelgrl65
your'e only going to have the heat set at about 85F, shouldn't be hot enough to melt the plastic or rubber, whatever the stopper is made of. if it's hot enough to melt that, it's too hot for the snake!!
colombiano89
oh i see i see sounds good.what do you think about having a light bulb on top of that?
kelgrl65
On my males tank I have a red night bulb for night time, only 50W. The female tank has one of those blue type lights, doesn't put out too much heat, but the room she is in is kind of dark, so I like to give some extra light during the day.

A lower watt bulb won't give off too much heat, and as long as it's not too bright, shouldn't bother the snake
colombiano89
i have a 100 watt light bulb and i will be using the heat pad what do u think..?
Ash19
What do you mean it doesn't fit? If it's the right one for your tank size, it should fit. I had no problems with mine...I also have an infrared bulb to go with it.
colombiano89
it fits exact but usualy the stoppers are not suppose to be on the pad i have to put the stoppers on the pad.i will also be having aq 100 wat light bulb
kelgrl65
depends on the size of the tank - 100w will put off quite a bit of heat, the bulb over my beardie is only 75w and i get temps right around 100F at her basking spot.

i have zoo med heat pads for 50 gal tank, both snake tanks are 50gal reptile aquariums - the pad is too long to go width wise, and actually go a little past the center support rail length way - guess i should have measured before i bought them! duh.....but i put them on anyway and they are working fine. figured colombiano was having the same issue i did!
Ash19
Ohhhh ok. I didn't think about measuring mine either. If you know the gallons or basic size of the tank, the heat pads tell you on it what size they will fit. I knew mine is a 40 gal so I bought the one for that and it fit perfect. I didn't even consider that it might not. My heat bulb is a 60watt. That and the heat matt keep the temps right. It's VERY cold in my room.
colombiano89
i have a 20 gal wif a pad and a 100 watt for a corn snake
hope thats alright lolol
Ash19
100watt might be too much....You'll need to control it.
kelgrl65
do you have a digital thermometer? you should monitor the temps to be sure it's not getting too hot. is the heat pad on a dimmer or temp dial? they get pretty hot, i have both mine on dimmers in the middle range and temps are 86F. I think a 100w bulb is too high to keep a good temp grade in a 20g.

You can get the digital therm at walmart, kmart or hardware store in the patio section, look for indoor/outdoor digital thermometers, they are less than $10 and well worth it.
colombiano89
so do you think that jsut a 100 watt woudl be ok for the snkae.?

I'm just curious - what size heat pad do you have? If it's not meant for a 20g tank I would take it back and get one that is the proper size. I'm guessing you have a typical 20g which has plastic trim on the top and bottom edges. A UTH is meant to be stuck flat to a glass surface only - I wouldn't take the chance of letting the pad overlap onto the plastic lips... Not only could the plastic melt but the UTH wouldn't be completely flat and this might create some little heat pockets. I"m guessing your UTH also takes up too much of the length of the tank, which could create an awkward temp gradient. Sounds like your heat lamp is also too high for your setup. Is your snake already in this environment? If so I hope you've got everything dimmed way down and you're closely watching all the temps, otherwise your snake will be cookin'
kelgrl65
you should check your temps with a digital term. belly heat is better for snakes it helps with their digestion, but it still needs to be monitored.

the amount of heat from a bulb will differ in every household, depends on ambient room temps, type of bulb, size and type of enclosure.....you still need to monitor the temps with a bulb. I only use the bulbs on my snakes enclosures for my viewing pleasure, that's why I use low wattage bulbs.

oh i see isee thx for the information im just gunna see what i can do

I bought two 20gal heaters to stick on the bottom of my 55gal. They run from the bottom of the side wall of the tank to about the middle but about 1.5-2 inches of the front and back bottom edges that are not exposed.

I use 2 layers of newspaper under repile carpet as a substrate. This helps the ground from getting to hot and reduces stress cracks in the glass bottom if my water dish spills.

I also have a 50watt infared spot light shining on the far left side over the first heat mat.

All this give me a tempurature graidient of: far left=97F middle=84F left side=77F

DO the two floro bulbs put off enough heat to justify a remote ballast? They get kind of hot after a full day of use.

ARE thes temps ok for a juvinille Ocotee Corn Snake or are they a bit on the hot side?
colombiano89
how long would a 10 gal suit a baby corn.
glass tank
heat pad and 50 watt light
2 hides
1 drink bowl
tkmofo
Zach your high temp is WAY too high. No temp, even directly under your light, should EVER be above 90F. Hot side should be mid to upper 80's, cool side should be mid to upper 70's (75-78). No temp should ever go above 90 or below room temp (72). Your Okeetee is gonna fry at 97, better re-adjust quick!

ps. are these temps you maintain 24 hours a day or do you drop temps slightly at night?
