Hey guys!
I had originally bought a Repti-Sun light for my corn snake's tank. After reading here and on another site that they don't need anything other than ambient light and that the intensity of other lights might actually make them more reclusive, I turned the light off.
Today I did a few upgrades on the tank, adding some additional substrate and some live terrarium plants (snake-safe). I also got a Night Glo bulb to add a little extra heat at the warm end of the tank (he now has a temperature range of 76 - 93 degrees).
My questions are:
[list]Are there any negatives to using the Night Glo bulb?
Do the Night Glo bulbs give off any UV light (for the plants, not for the snake)?[list]
Thanks!!!

As far as I know, blue bulbs shouldn't be used for snakes. They don't see the red part of the spectrum, so a red light on a thermostat going on and off to maintain temps wouldn't bother your snake. I think plants need a full spectrum bulb. A red or blue bulb won't help your plants. You could use a regular 25 or 40 watt bulb set on a timer to come on in late morning and go off in the evening. Most snakes don't slither about in the daytime anyway. Just make sure you take into account the extra heat from the bulb when you set your thermostat.

I use a Night Glo Bulb for a couple of my corns and it seems to work fine. I heard they can't see any light coming from the purple bulb and they are very active when it's on. I'd expect that it would work just as well as a red bulb. The purple bulb was good for me becuase I used to house my corns in my bedroom, so the purple bulb wasn't so bright that it'd keep me up at night.
