Full Version: Feed once or twice a week?

I have a 16 month old corn housed in a 20 long. She is doing great and right now eats 2 fuzzies once a week. Is it better to feed one fuzzy twice a week or two once a week?
Axe
for a 16 month old, I'd go with every 7-10 days, and it's better to feed one appropriately sized food item than 2 too-small food items (it's cheaper too).

How long is she?

Hmm. My Corn will be 15 months old tomorrow. He gets 1 sub-adult rat (4.5 inches long w/o the tail) every 6 days. He was eating 2 mouse fuzzies every 5 days back in April and part of May. His shed was 26" then. He was on mouse hoppers by June (32" shed). His last shed was 45". I'm not sure how long he is (at least 3 feet I think). How long is your snake? Are you sure that 2 fuzzies are enough? Maybe you could move up in mouse size?

Shed size is very deceptive, you're better going by the size of the snake.

If you can get a photo of the snake on the ground, along with something for size comparison (like a dollar bill, or a ruler in inches), there are applications out there that allow you to plot the head to tail of your snake and it will give you the straightened out total length.

I use this with my boas when I also weigh them.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll get a pick up in the next few days. I was thiking she may need a bigger mouse. Where is the best place to buy mice online?
Axe
If you're buying from anywhere online, probably Rodent Pro, but be warned, you'll need to buy a LOT of them for it to be worth it, because you're usually spending at least 40-50 bucks just in shipping charges (overnight, with dry ice).

Axe, Thanks for the size thing info. I agree about Rodent Pro. I think that in order to get the value of ordering online, your snake has to be an adult and eating the same size rat. My snake went up in mouse size every 1.5 to 2 months. So that would be moving up in mouse size every 12 feedings or so. I am thinking that once my snake gets to full size, then I can order online. Unless you can split an online order with other snake keepers, it doesn't pay to buy online for only one snake until your snake is full grown and eating 1 size consistently. I have about a year to go for that. You should check out www.rodentpro.com though. They have great pictures to compare sizes etc to see if you want to move up in size or not. I don't think shipping is as much as Axe says. It depends where you live. They have a way for you to get an exact price on shipping based on your zipcode.

If you buy vacuum packed (I just had a similar conversation in the chat room), you can store for a year or more in the freezer. So you can buy quantities of multiple sizes so your prey can "grow" as your snake does.

Alternatively, you can speak to other snake keepers in your area and see if you all want to pitch in on a single big order - I know a few who do that.
