Full Version: Finally! My new Corn!
The Reptile Rooms > Snakes > Corns & Rat Snakes

Hey guys! I know I've been very silent for a few weeks... but I'm back... With GREAT news!!! Yes... I have found her... she is perfect and such a beauty!!! I had some problems with the owner of my building but after a lot of insisting and smart debating he finally said it was ok for me to have one in my student room!!! Needless to say that after over a year and a half of patient waiting I jumped in the train to Brussels (I live 120 Km south in Liege) to visit the three top breeders I had been recommended. The first one was a great dissapointment as I had no good vibes coming from him. He'd be very rough and careless while handling his poor snakes and he only had red amynalistics. The second one seemed nice enough but as he wasn't an actual full time breeder had already sold all of this years' hatchlings. So it was with a little aprehension that I went to my third option... You guys cant imagine how releived I was to see this guy's shop! He handled them with love and care and had everything from turtles, to geckos, to ball pythons, to chameleons and of course.. Corn Snakes!!!! He's got loads of morphs.. and even... really interesting crosses of his own. I settled on a beautiful, and seriously she is really BEAUTIFUL strawberry x ghost... I havent got pics of her yet coz im still in Brussels but once she's all settled in I will be posting them! I still havent decided on her name but I have a few in mind. She's really curious and seems super comfortabe with me already. I have left her in her terrarium for the moment but sunday she will have a little trip to make... home.

Em.. I have a problem... my darling little princess here has just crawled into one of those 'spaces' between the glass and the styrofoam background that allow wires to get thru and I need to get her out of there and into her fauna box for tomorrow (moving day wink.gif ) any ideas? I know she cant escape thru there but I cant get her out either...
Oh and another problem. The guy that was gonna drive me back cant do it anymore so I cant take the viv with me yet and I think its ok for me to keep her in her fauna box till next weekend (right?) I just dont know whether I shud put the heating mats under it. Coz the mat is actually bigger than the fauna box so its gonna be hard to do a cool side and a warm side...
jammer
Hmm. Can't really help with how you might get her unstuck. Corn's don't seem to like water very much. Maybe a little shower would get her out. As far the "fauna box"?, snakes can deal with cold better than heat. I wouldn't heat anything without a gradient. Up to 75 degrees would be okay for the whole box, maybe 80. I wouldn't put a uth on it at all.
matt_k
I agree, as long as you keep the box in a warm room, you should be alright. Or, why can't you put the UTH under the box? Can't half the box hang over the edge of the UTH?

And about the water...my corns all seem to like the water. If they are put in a container of water for a bath, they seem to thrive and they don't try to get out at all. If they are misted with water or even have water dumped on them they don't try to get away or anything. But, my humidity is only at 30%, so maybe that's why they like water.
verycrazygirl
Thanks guys.. I'm not going to try the water thing coz i dont want to risk upsetting her. But thanks for the tips!! I guess I could just leave her her until next week but that means she'll have to skip a meal coz my grandma absolutely refuses to pick up a mouse (a live 60cm snake sure! but a dead fuzzy no way!... go figure!) I love her she's so cool!! anyway I know its not a big deal for her to skip a meal but i wanted to keep them regular.. oh well
Its terrible how im such an avid parent already! I guess everybody probably goes through this whole 'my baby needs to have her meals on time, the best names, the best bowl, the.. etc'. Its so funny but i cant help it lol
jammer
verycrazygirl, It doesn't get any better either. I have had my corn for almost a year, he hasn't eaten for 2 weeks because of the timing of the shed. He finally shed today, and he still didn't want the rat I offered him. GRRRR!! So, as you can see, you don't just go through the mother phase, it tends to last. smile.gif
verycrazygirl
Hey guys! Soraia (yeah.. thats her name) has made it to Liege and has been very comfy and active in her viv; She's got all a little corn snake could want and gave me the privilge to feed her her first fuzzy in liege!!! She took 3 mins lol (yeah im sad.. i filmed it.. lol)
Thx guys for all the help you gave me along my months of preparation! Without I wouldn't have been as welll prepared.

JAMMER: Oh thx lol, well its kinda reassuring, ppl will probably be more patient with me then! Corats on ur shedding!

oh yeah and i did wet her a little bit although i said i wasnt going to wink.gif lol and as she didnt even budge i gave her a 'shower' lol (half a small glass of water) and princess here just seemed to really enjoyed it! and didnt come out. Can't wait to see pics. As for posting pics you have to upload them to a free site. I don't know how the image gallery works here yet, still have to read a little bit more on the instructions page. Otherwise you can use photobucket, and there are some others. Once you have uploaded them to the web you just put the url of the pic inbetweent the image tages ( ).

verycrazygirl, He took the rat yesterday. It took him about 25 minutes to get it down (The front legs were at a bad angle and he had to reposition). It was his "next size up" rat and I am glad he got it down. Our snakes will always be babies to us!!! LOL!!!
verycrazygirl
Oh 'worried mommy' here wonders what the best humidity level would be for her preciousssss lol coz mine is almost 50% right now.. that sounds a bit high doesnt it?? Oh yeah and whats the best humidity level once its shedding time?
Thx guys

Jammer: Gr8 I'm glad he ate!! Its so exciting isnt it! Especially when theres sumthin new about it.. first feed, first feed after a shed, size changes etc. Im sorta glad we stay hyper about them coz they are amazing animals. My sister lives in Portugal (where i used to live sad.gif ) and i sent her the video of Soaia eating and u shud have seen her face lol. Bu then again she played it over and over.. lol  How much u wanna bet shes gonna want to show it to everyone!

verycrazygirl, Normal house humidity is fine. Corn snakes don't live where it is very humid (Carolinas, Virginia, mid-south). When the eyes go blue, then you could put a humid hide in with your snake. I just use a plastic container with a hole cut in the side and put damp aspen shavings in it. Put it in the middle temp zone. I have never manipulated the humidity in his viv. I don't even have a humidity gauge. I don't think that Motega even used his damp hide. His shed was perfect. I have his last 6 sheds (is that wierd to save them?) and they are all perfect. If he needs the humidity, he uses the hide (like in the winter when the air is drier). Putting a hide in gives them the choice to use it or not. Anyway, I am psyched that he ate the rat!!! I had always heard that switching from mice to rats was difficult. My guy has always been a good eater though.

I hope this works.. if it doesnt the pics are in my gallery. I dont know how to upload pics in a free site.. Sry I'm not very good at this..

verycrazygirl, You have to upload your pics to another site that can "host" them. I use www.photobucket.com It's free as well. Good luck!

verycrazygirl, Beautious! (not a real word) lol. Really cool. About that coconut hide.... There was another post on this site about a Corn getting stuck in the hole in the top. Anyway, nice snake!
matt_k
Yeah, one of my corns got stuck in the top of his coconut hut. She could fit through it easily for the longest time, I never thought that as she grew, she won't be able to fit through the hole. One day I checked on her and she was caught in the hole. So I had to cut her out and make the hole big enough for an adult to fit through. Now, none of my corns will use it...I'm guessing because it isn't much of a hide with such a big hole in the top. So keep in mind...it will get stuck eventually if you don't make the hole bigger. But, it looks like she has a while to go...

Very nice.
verycrazygirl
My coconuts dont have holes in the top... where did u uys see holes???
Thx jammer, I like ur new word wink.gif
jammer
verycrazygirl, I'm not sure I did see the hole I guess. it sorta looked like a hole in the top. Maybe it was a dent in the top. I just thought they all had a hole in the top. Oh well. lol.
matt_k
Yeah, I didn't see a hole either...I've just never seen one without a hole so I assumed yours had one. If there is no hole, then I guess you're good to go.
Ash19
Pretty corn smile.gif Very nice colours.
verycrazygirl
thx lol
i investigated on the 'holes' and i think i can see where they're supposed to be and rest assured. mine are still intact
thx guys
