Full Version: I found motley/heating rocks
The Reptile Rooms > Snakes > Corns & Rat Snakes

I lost 2 snakes and 2 days ago found the older one and then today found the baby motley. they're living together right now b/c i got motley after i lost huey and we didn't make the cage escape proof yet b/c i thought he couldn't get out... he did. lol. the guys at the pet store said that they can live together forever, is that true? i have a 20 gal. tank... would i need a bigger one?

Also a whole bunch of people said that heating rocks are bad. but i have a lamp, a heating pad on the bottom and the cage temp was still under what it was supposed to be until i got the heating rock. they barely even go on it and just stay on the side so is it really that bad?

Unfortuntly they are less then safe. I would recomend against using the rock because the snake may very likely burn itself. I would recomend using another lamp or a UTH (under tank heater). Its beter to spend the money on that then pay the vet to try to help your snake heal from a burn.

It's also not good to let the snakes stay together. Believe it or not they really dont care for each other, they simply have similar needs and the spots that they are gathering together meet those needs.
Tessa
but the snakes have seemed to get along just fine, at the pet store they sold them with like 5 in a cage together. they've been right with each other almost the entire time since they've been put together.

Don't do it, just because the pet store does it. Our local petstore keeps leos with fat-tail geckos, multiple ball pythons together, Bearded Dragons with Uromastyx, and the list goes on and on. It's ridiculous.

I have worked in a pet store, and it has only enforced my dislike of how they treat reptiles. Petstores should stick to mammals and leave the snakes and such to the pros.

Usually petstores sell multiple animals together because of the shipments they get, and because of the space as well. A general rule of thumb is to never house snakes together because this can happen:

That is sick. A simple discription would have been fine. In good taste that second photo should be removed.

Petstores shouldn't be selling any animals. They just suck. I've heard so many stories about people buying puppies and such from pet stores and the puppy dying within days of purchase. It's disgusting. They have no care for the animals they sell.

general rule of thumb is 1 reptile to 1 enclosure, although female corn snakes will live quite happily together provided they are a similar age and/or size. males and females should only be brought together for breeding in my opinion.
