Full Version: Feeding a Corn

I have a 2.5 foot snow corn snake that is currently getting an adult mouse a week. I've noticed that his tail is getting thinner, and I've heard that that means he needs more food. Is that true? If so, what should I feed him? I gave him a fuzzy and an adult (fuzzy before the adult because it was from frozen and the adult was live) but he just ate the fuzzy and killed and left the adult. He ate a hopper I gave him 2 days later. What would you guys suggest I do?

an adult mouse a week is more than sufficient for a 30" corn...

First thing I would suggest is don't feed live smile.gif

I'd go with fresh killed at the least, or frozen-thawed if possible. I always go with frozen/thawed. Aside from the fact that a dead rodent can't chew on my snakes, freezing kills many of the bacteria, parasites and other nasties that could be hiding inside feeders.

I am switching to frozen (have one thawing right now). I just wasn't sure how he'd take to it. Well, if 1 is enough, I guess I won't worry about it. Thanks smile.gif

Yeah, I've got a mousey thawing out for ours right now too, lol.

I would say 1 adult mouse a week is definitely more than enough... I've got a couple of males about that size, and they're growing just fine on one adult mouse a week...

Basically, if it's not enough, he won't be growing. If he's growing (even if he looks a lil slim), then it's enough...

Some people do "power feed" their snakes, to basically get them up to breeding size in the first year, but it drastically shortens their lifespan.

Normally, with a nice modest regular feeding schedule, a corn should reach adulthood at about 3 years old, and live to be well in their twenties.

So when they're young, how do you know if you're feeding them too much?

Without growth charts to compare to, it's tough to say...

But one mouse every 7-10 days should be a good regime, and I wouldn't class that as "too much".

Basically, try to go for a single food item that is 1-1.5x as thick as the thickest part of their body every 7-10 days.

i just bought a corn snake yesterday and the guy fed her 2 adult mice. She is 1 year old and is about 3 feet long. She ate both of the mice within 10mins. Do you think I need to up her food?

No, the snake is fine there. He was power feeding her to get t a breeding size.

My four are a year old and ~2' in length.

I would keep the feeding at the level it is.

The size of the mouse can be determined by the widest part of the snakes body.

My snow corns are almost up to fuzzies because they are much thicker than the creamesicle corns which are thinner and eating meduim sized pinkies.

i've never had a snake before so sorry if i'm asking so many basic questions. but the guy at the store i bought her told me i should feed her the two adult mice once a week. is that enough? i don't know snakes at all so i want to make sure i'm doing everything correctly.
TomServo
That is more than enough. In the wild, they would most likely eat less than that.
