Post subject: Under tank heaters?

I'm having a problem with my UTH that I just bought. I know that they are supposed to cover 1/2 to 1/3 of the bottom of the tank but the 10-20 gallon size doesn't. If there are two under there it would be about the right size but is it a bad idea to use two? As of right now, I have one under there but the gradient isn't doing very well. It says 102 degrees on the warmest part but it goes down to 77 degrees only a few inches away from there. Does it take a while for the glass to heat up and the temp to get regulated? Any advice? By the way, I'm measuring these temperatures with a temp gun.
Thanks!

Also, I got the ReptiTemp 500R thermostat. It has colors on it instead of temps, which I didn't think would be that hard to figure out but it's darn confusing!

Does your ReptiTemp 500R thermostat have more than one place that you can plug in a heating device? If it does, you can try getting a second uth EXACTLY like the one you have, and plug them both into the thermostat; then plug the thermostat into the wall.

If you do this, one of the heat mats may still be a tad warmer than the other. You will want to put the probe of the thermostat on the warmest one.

What kind of substrate do you have? To even out the temps a bit, you might want to try using tile for your substrate.

Glad you figured out the thermostat Very Happy

I'm using repti carpet but I've been thinking about tile soon. The heat lamp that I have keeps his tank at a pretty consistent 86 degrees so I decided to put the UTH on very very low and it's been keeping it at about 91-92 degrees. I've been taking the temp like a madman (madwoman?) because I don't want it to get too hot in there lol.

It sounds like you have things figured out, but for future reference...

- The hottest point of the UTH is the center. The edges shouldn't drop off dramatically, but they will likely be a few degrees cooler.

- I've been told that measuring with a temp gun can be tricky. It's all about the angle you shoot at. So unless you're a super temp slinger (which you very well could be) then maybe mis-measurement could have been partly to blame for the big differences you were seeing before.

It's a possibility that it was mis-measurement because I definitely wouldn't say that I'm a super temp gun slinger lol.

Lol. Whatever it may have been I'm glad that you seem to have it figured out now. Smile
