| Why is it a better idea to put a heat mat under the enclosure if it is glass? |

| Well most reptiles that need under tank heaters, require belly heat so it's ideal to put the heat mat under the tank. The only time you usually put the heat mat on the side is if the bottom is plastic, or the reptiles are burrowing. |

The undertank heat gives the reptiles a much closer source of heat. Though light bulbs emit heat, reptiles need warmth from underneath them as well to aid in digestion. Undertank heaters are also good for night-time when the lights are out and the reptiles still need some warmth |

| oh if its on the inside you run the risk of the animal touching the heat pad and getting burnt... or water/moisture hitting it and causing it to short circuit and shock your animal or worse start a fire. Never put an undertank heater inside the tank. Thats why they are called undertank heaters |

Thats not technically true Coexist... you can very safely put uth in vivs so long as certain conditions are met. Knowing Deydey keeps leos there is nothing really wrong with keeping your uth in the viv... wooden vivs are a great example. So long as it is on a thermostat and there is a suitable substrate the burn issue is redundant. The chances of shorting a heat mat with water is virtually nonexistent esp within a leo set up.
However, most people who have glass put them on the outside because it is easier. It also means fewer cables coming out the top of the tank for geckos to climb up (I had a leo that could escape by climbing up the thermostat and thermometer cabling, a third thick cable would have made it even easier for her). It also makes it easier to mess about with the mat should you need to rather than having to take everything out the tank.
There is nothing wrong with using a uth inside a viv though in this situation. |

This is sometimes true, but remember to test the temps above the mat every month to make sure that there isn't anything going wrong.
I had a green iguaua as a kid (well my parents took care of him) but something went bad with a mat we bought for him (it was only a few months old) and it had a thermostat on it and still got far too hot and gave him thermal burns. |

I wouldn't worry about cracking your viv deydey. If you have a UTH that is in good condition, is being controlled and monitored you shouldn't have any problems with it. Another reason Noah may have had those problems could have been from a tank in poor condition, or not leaving some space under the tank for ventilation.
I guess what I'm saying is that it can and does happen, it just isn't very likely. |

Nitro... do you have any idea what temperature glass melts?
above 1400*C
thats 2,552*F.
You really need to think about what you are saying before you type it. Under Tank Heaters are made to be attached to the glass, however like has been stated when proper care is taken they can be used inside of a wooden enclosure. |
