I live upstate New York, and now that the weather is finally breaking, the ants are becoming active.

Today I got home from work and noticed several ants in my Leo's tank. Should I be concerned. This is my first spring season with a leopard gecko, and I'm not totally sure how to react. He's an insectivore and everything but I just like to hear some input.

I haven't dealt with ants like that. Here are a few ideas off the top of my head.

Are the ants bothering him and crawling all over him and his tank? My first concern is that they may stress him, or try to eat at him while he is sleeping.

My second concern is that they could possibly carry parasites and introduce them to your leo.

Are they after anything like particular kinds of food or water?

You may be able to keep them out of the tank by putting vasaline around it's base.

They were around his water dish when I got home this afternoon. I quickly removed them.

I don't know if they sell them where you are, but for around my fish tanks I have these "sound" emitters that only insects can hear and it drives them away. It's really helped with the spiders - hardly ever see them anymore and has reduced the number of fruit flies that like to inhabit my goldfish tank in the spring/summer. It might work.

This is wierd; my sister discovered it. Try putting chalk around your tank. It seems like ants don't cross heavy chalk lines. She would draw little circles around an ant, and the ant would go around and around, and not walk on the chalk. Then, my mom had an ant infestation, and powdered some chalk, and put it in the cracks against the base boards and kitchen counters, and the ants left alone anything that had dry chalk around it. When the chalk got wet, like when she mopped the floor, they started coming back. We don't know why it works, but it's amazing (and I just remembered it Wink )

Ants are a bummer. We had a serious infestation last year and lost a couple hundred crickets to them. Sad

I suggest moving your leo for a bit and scrubbing out his tank and the accessories. Wash everything down and wash around where the tank sits. You don't need to be a maniac about it, just make sure everything has been cleaned. There's no way of knowing what the ants may have brought in there with them.

Double sided sticky tape or fly tape will keep them from crawling up whatever his tank is sitting on. Vaseline may work well too, I haven't tried it before. If chalk lines are a possibility they work wonders too. A thick enough line of chalk or chalk powder breaks their scent trail so they won't want to cross over it. I've also found those little ant motel things at Walgreens to be super effective. We had had an exterminator lay some bait and that worked for the colony we had, but we were still seeing a lot of stragglers. Those little traps though did a wonderful job of taking them out and I believe they just use peanut butter, so they should be animal and child friendly if you have four-legged creatures roaming around your room. Smile

So that's why it works! My sister discovered it, and we knew it worked, but we didn't know why.
