Post subject: New Gecko... Not new to geckos but have some questions.... Posted: Mar 25, 2008 - 12:10 AM

So Its been a long time since I've been on here but Im at a bit of a loss... I did a huge "no, no" the other day and came home with a pet store gecko... Now spare me the lecture I already know and Im generally against the pet store pet trade... However, I do check out the reptiles every time I go in and this time there just happened to be a very small African Fat Tail... She was on sand had no water and one hide... which peeved me off as usual... but telling them does nothing...they just look at me like I have 5 heads haha anywho Olivia just looked at me with her huge eyes and she got me haha I bought her... I dont think shes any more than a year a old, very under weight, looks as though at one point she lost her tail... I've yet to find a vet where I am or have any time at the current moment being that school is almost done and Im so behind in homework and getting work ready for critique day... I do plan on taking her as I've taken my other geckos to vet when I first got them.
So Im not too concerned about her gaining weight and such I've been down that road with Stubbs and Squirt... I am however concerned about what I found when I got home today... I found 2 dried up eggs in one of her hides... (I was away for the weekend and my sister drops food in and makes sure they all have water but she wouldnt have noticed the eggs...)
The eggs were obviously dead when I found them... I did notice that Olivia's belly was kinda big but I figured it was the sand and gave her some slurry... Now looking back I probably should have checked for eggs... From what Ive read she'll probably have a few more eggs... Im just really not sure how to deal with this issue.... Im not set up to allow these eggs hatch... I really dont have the time or space for them which Im looking at now and Im not feeling so good about that however I do know the Olivia will have a way better life now. Im just not sure how to go about keeping her healthy during this ordeal. I have her on mealies (the others eat supers but shes so small) I've also put some wax worms in there. Im not big on crix they smell, and are noisy haha and not really that high in fat... I just really want to get her healthy...
cheers |

I had a similar situation a couple of years back with a rescue... she was very skinny and laying. As long as she is eating I would start a very rigorous feeding schedule... I used to feed twice a night - once early on (7/8pm) and then again at first light, basically every 10-12 hours doing a feeding of well gutloaded feeders. I wouldn't bother with the waxworms - if she is carrying they aren't going to give her anything except a belly too full of crap to get good nutrients into her. Mealworms on a good gutload and well dusted will be perfect for her. I'd go with a homemade gutload if you can... I just think they work better and are guaranteed to be fresher than the pre-bought stuff. I'll stick my gutload recipe at the end of this post for you if it is of any use. It is also going to be really important to get as much calcium into her as possible. It may turn out to be a phantom pregnancy and she may not lay any others but it is best to be prepared.
As for the eggs - if you don't have the space/time/etc then freeze them. Stick them in a baggie and put them in the freezer for 30 minutes. You aren't causing any pain as there isn't a gecko in them per se but it means that there won't be any accidental incubation (think how hot it gets in a trash heap). Once you have frozen them, chuck them.
Homemade Gutload:
1 cup dry milk
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 package of baby rice cereal
1 cup of good quality dog food - having a dog really helps here cat food would also work but some of them have hidden additives so dog food is safer
2 capsules of milk thistle
3/4 cup of pure bee pollen grains
1 cup spirulina powder, recommended brand Earthrise
1 cup wheatgerm
1/2 seaweed, even the stuff for sushi is good
I put the whole lot in a food processor to break it into a nice powder - not too fine if you are giving it to mealworms though, they can suffocate on it. then keep out enough to use for 1 week, keep it in the fridge and the rest freeze in baggies (again in one week portion sizes) and you can keep that for up to 3 months.
Give the feeders some grated carrot, a bit of apple or even some lettuce every couple of days to provide moisture but dont let it come into contact with the gutload if possible. |

| she's lovely, and not as skinny as I was expecting. She should manage the eggs not too badly. She has a very pretty little face. |
